Transforming The Bulletin into a modern,
connected digital platform

The client
The Bulletin equips the public, policymakers, and scientists with the information needed to reduce man-made threats to our existence.
Swapps partnered with The Bulletin from 2017 to 2023. Website: thebulletin.org
The challenge
- Facilitate website maintenance and reduce costly technical updates.
- Unintuitive editorial interface for the internal team.
- Outdated premium membership system that is difficult to integrate with your CRM processes.
- Integration with Salesforce, enabling and facilitating synchronization with subscribers and donors.
- Need to maintain a high standard of performance, security, and accessibility.
The solution
- Set up automatic security update flows, uptime monitoring, and daily backups.
- Completed the migration of all content (articles, authors, categories, images) to WordPress, preserving editorial hierarchy, URLs, and SEO architecture.
- Developed custom templates with ACF (Advanced Custom Fields) to replicate key Drupal functionality in WordPress.
- Built an intuitive editorial experience using the Block Editor and custom fields, minimizing reliance on plugins.
- Synchronized forms and user profiles with Salesforce CRM.
- Connected subscriptions, contact forms, and donation reports through API integrations and Zapier.
- Implemented a premium membership system for exclusive content access with recurring payments, along with donation campaigns.

Site Migration: From Drupal to WordPress
The first step was to migrate the site from Drupal to WordPress, which allowed for greater flexibility, scalability, and ease of use for the internal team. All historical content – including scientific articles, blog posts, authors, and multimedia files – was transferred, ensuring the preservation of URLs and SEO structure. We used Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) to create a custom backend that replicates the editorial complexity of Drupal but with the simplicity and control of WordPress.
Salesforce Integration
Integration with Salesforce was key to maintaining a connected ecosystem. Through API integrations and tools such as Zapier, subscription forms, user data, and key events (such as renewals or cancellations) were connected directly to the institution's development and marketing team's CRM.
Premium Subscription System
A premium membership system was implemented, offering exclusive content to subscribers, managing recurring payments, and providing differentiated access without compromising the reading experience.
